Which ferrule for which application?

The ferrule guides the fiber and defines how precise, how hot and how powerful a connection may run. FEMOtech machines metal ferrules from Arcap, copper and stainless steel in-house and drills them exactly to your fiber. Full decision guide: metal or ceramic ferrule.

Arcap, copper or stainless steel

A metal ferrule is a turned fiber guide whose bore can be freely matched to the fiber diameter. That is its strength: FEMOtech drills metal ferrules from 70 µm exactly to your fiber instead of limiting you to standard inner diameters.

  • Arcap: non-magnetic alloy, corrosion-resistant; lead-free on request as Arcap Zest®
  • Copper: high thermal conductivity, preferred at high laser powers
  • Stainless steel: mechanically robust and corrosion-resistant

For high-power and high-temperature applications the path almost always leads to the metal ferrule: to the custom solutions.

Ceramic for standard fiber geometries

Ceramic ferrules offer excellent dimensional stability and wear-free mating cycles for common fiber geometries. FEMOtech uses them in the DIN and FCPC programme and in the FTTH connector system (ferrules Ø 1.25 mm and Ø 2.50 mm).

Frequently asked questions

Which fiber optic connector types does FEMOtech manufacture?

FEMOtech manufactures FSMA 905 connectors (standard and free-standing), LD80-compatible connectors, DIN connectors and FCPC connectors as well as FSMA, LD80 and FC adapters. All types are available with metal ferrules; DIN and FCPC optionally with ceramic ferrules. Accessories such as captive dust caps complete the programme.

What ferrule bore diameters are available?

Standard connectors are available with ferrule bores from 70 µm. The data sheet standard ranges span 100 to 1400 µm depending on the type; other diameters are machined on request, matched exactly to your fiber. For special bores and tight concentricity see custom fiber optic solutions.

Metal or ceramic ferrule: which is better?

It depends on power, temperature and fiber. Metal ferrules made of Arcap, copper or stainless steel dissipate heat and can be drilled to individual diameters; ceramic ferrules offer excellent dimensional stability for standard fiber geometries.
